Milano

It is in Milan, in the Gallaratese district, the first mural in Italy of the street artist Shepard Fairey, aka Obey.

OBAMA’S ‘HOPE’

Born in Charleston in 1970, Obey is one of the most influential and committed urban artists on the contemporary scene and has been known worldwide since 2008 when he campaigned for Obama’s “Hope” election campaign, the manifesto with the face of the then governor of Illinois in the colors of the national flag and the large HOPE inscription.

UNTIL OCTOBER 27TH

On the occasion of the exhibition open until October 27 in the spaces of Fabbrica del Vapore, which traces the 35th anniversary of his career, Obey donates a large mural to Milan in the Gallaratese district. The work, entitled “Tear flame peace”, was conceived as part of the artistic residence at Fabbrica del Vapore and was created in the setting of the “Manifestival” Urban Art Festival, promoted by the Arrigo and Pia Pini Foundation with the support of Orticanoodles and Wit Design.

A MESSAGE OF UNIVERSAL PEACE

Inaugurated in via Adolfo Consolini 26, in the Gallaratese district, the large mural is a message of universal peace and was built on the wall of a municipal residential building that measures 34×12 square meters: in the foreground the eye of a woman with the hijab, the traditional Islamic veil, which mourns a giant tear, which in turn contains the sign of the war. The colors used by Obey are those of the Ukrainian and Russian flags, but a pattern also clearly recalls the Arab world and its conflicts.

CITIZENS INVOLVED IN THE SELECTION F THE TOPIC

The mural is therefore a manifesto of peace, a theme deeply felt not only by the artist, but also by the community of citizens and towns in the neighborhood, who were involved in the selection of the topic to be proposed to the artist.
